Long-term strategic research on obesity prevention, intervention and mechanisms and its comorbidities

The aim of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the health and quality of life of Slovak residents suffering from obesity and associated health complications and accompanying diseases (so-called comorbidities) through progressive research carried out by top scientific and research staff of 4 academic and 3 industrial partners. The project will be implemented in 8 activities in the eligible area using 15 % flexibility. In activities 1-5, independent research will be carried out on mechanisms and obesity and its accompanying diseases, physical and nutritional programmes of obesity intervention, research on nutritional supplements and accurate dietary intakes for weight reduction. In activities 6-8, industrial research will be carried out on innovative technology for the preparation of nutritional supplements, the impact of metabolic stress on the tumor phenotype and research on a unique expert computer system for predicting a personalised combination of nutritional supplements. Activities will share bio-based materials, data and information to ensure knowledge transfer and coordination of procedures. The main output of the project will be the creation of a functional model of the first Centre for Obesity Management in Slovakia, accredited by the European Association for Obesity Research (EASO), and its subsequent establishment and commissioning in the short term after the end of the project. We expect that CMOs will enable the improvement of superstructure management of obese patients through a comprehensive approach of professionals based on current medical and scientific knowledge. At the same time, the project will bring new scientific knowledge, applications, innovative products and will contribute to raising public awareness (especially youth) about the adverse effects of obesity on health and the course of comorbidities, the contribution of obesity research, the possibilities for intervention and the importance of prevention and prophylaxis of obesity and its accompanying diseases. The implementation of the project will stimulate public-private R & D and innovation cooperation between academic and business actors and improve their competitiveness.
