Strategic research on SMART monitoring, treatment and prevention against coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)

The material purpose of the project consists of three interconnected thematic areas – monitoring, detection and decontamination/disinfection. The main objective of the project is the development of a SMART system based on artificial intelligence and new generation sensors, capable of detecting possible return or outbreaks of COVID-19 in the Slovak population on the basis of nearly real-time wastewater analysis and this SMART system in terms of sensitivity also compares from already established procedures based mainly on RT-PCR analysis. To achieve the main objective, the project will also include milestones. Firstly, the development of several types of next-generation bio-microsensors (bio-microsensors for different application areas) aimed at the rapid detection of viral RNA in waste water and biological samples of potentially infected subjects (skin, saliva, sweat and urine). Secondly, the development and testing of innovative degradation and decontamination procedures and technologies, including the development of wastewater treatment technology from point sources (especially health facilities but also e.g. retirement homes), technologies modifying the procedure of drinking water treatment and development of coatings, antiviral materials and surfaces based on selected polymers and their mixtures. The project is implemented through two main activities of independent research and development, due to the use of 15 % flexibility, by an interdisciplinary team of top scientists of three faculties of the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava, namely: Faculty of Material Technology based in Trnava (MTF), Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology (FCHPT) and Faculty of Electronics and Informatics (FEI), visiting top researchers at Comenius University and Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) and six foreign experts. Part of the project is extensive cooperation with the business sector, which will be involved in the implementation of the project as external partners.
