Safe mobility in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: safe operation and use of means of rail passenger transport

The present project under the call for applications for a non-repayable financial contribution to support the mobilisation and exploitation of the potential of research institutions in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and reducing the negative consequences of the pandemic under OPII-VA/DP/2020/9.4-01 aims at industrial research and experimental development related to an eligible range of themes, namely:  Safe mobility in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic:  safe operation and use of rail passenger means (‘GERMTRAIN’). Through its research and development capacities, the railway company Slovensko, a.s. (hereinafter referred to as “ZSSK”) will analyse the possibility of installing several disinfection methods and equipment in its rolling stock for transporting the travelling public. As part of the implementation of the first work package, various methods and equipment suitable for fixed installation in rolling stock will be tested. In the course of the project, the effectiveness and suitability of the test methods and their impact on the travelling public will be evaluated in cooperation with renowned health authorities. After evaluation of the results achieved, industrial research will be carried out, in which the most efficient equipment will be installed in different types of rolling stock and tested in service for a long time. Another objective of the project is to develop a prototype of autonomous “disinfection” robotic equipment, which will be able to replace human labour when disinfecting the interior of the rolling stock with special aerosols. This activity is physically demanding, repetitive and requires the operator to be clothed in a special protective suit throughout the application period. During the project, several solutions will be tested and a prototype for long-term testing will be carried out in cooperation with the research site within the project implementation site, which is the locomotive depo in Košice, which is exclusively owned by ZSSK. During the project preparation phase, the applicant selected a combination of measurable project indicators in relation to the project activities. Key measurable indicators whose target values will be achieved through the implementation of the project are mainly indicators with code P0231 Number of new researchers in supported entities/undertakings with a target value of 2, P0325 Number of supported research institutions with a target value of 1, P0355 Number of applications for registration of intellectual property rights with a target value of 2, P0762 Number of publications produced under the 2 target project, one of which will be in the Web of Science Core Collection and SCOPUS databases (P0905) and one publication of an entity from the Slovak Republic in other databases such as Web of Science Core Collection and SCOPUS (P0906) and PCV 33 Number of entities, who have received support to combat the COVID-19 pandemic or to mitigate its consequences with a target of 1.
