The main objective of the project is to stabilise the applicant’s high-quality research teams in the knowledge field of Material Engineering and Nanotechnology and to enable the independent R & D activity to be realised by 30.6.2019 with the relevant project outputs.  The project will carry out independent research and development in the field of materials for the creation of functional surfaces in order to enhance knowledge in this field, to design the appropriate composition of these coatings taking into account specific technological metal processing operations, to verify and better understand the topics. This mainly involves the application of technological processes in the creation of functional coatings that will increase their tribological characteristics, in particular by extending the element base of the currently most applied coatings of Al-Ti-N and Al-Cr-N by interstitial elements B, C, O amorphising elements Si and other transit and high-melting elements to improve the mechanical properties of coatings and increase thermal stability in high-speed machining processes. Monitoring of interactions at the coating/washer interface and atmosphere/surface of the coating, as well as the possibilities of using controlled oxidation for, is also a very important element of research.  The application of these procedures at the same time as the adaptation of the technology of their creation and subsequent structural analysis will generate significant knowledge, not yet published, which will allow qualitatively to increase the characteristics of cutting tools with significant economic cost savings in metallic material processing processes.
