Innovation in primary agricultural production for sustainable agriculture

Increasing the level of crop and livestock production is essential for sustainable agriculture. One of the technological priorities of the current RIS3 SK Strategy is environment, agriculture, food security with a focus on advanced technologies and practices in the field of agriculture and food to ensure that healthy food production is sufficient. The project enables this priority to be met by its focus. The solution is closely linked to the domain “Healthy food and environment” in the main relevant SK NACE sector “A01 Agriculture” and fulfils the integrated development trend 1. “Sustainable and competitive agricultural and forestry production of primary resources”. The project is in line with the product line ‘Innovation and optimisation of cultivation practices for higher added-value crops’, which is part of the trend ‘Progressive agrotechnical practices, using the latest biotechnological and technical knowledge for the production of plants with a high content of valuable ingredients for quality food, feed, concentrates and pure natural substances’, as well as with the product line ‘Freeding plants efficient use of a wide range of original genetic material, for the creation of new, more powerful varieties with a high content of required valuable substances’ in the trend ‘Creation of new biological materials for the production of plant and animal primary raw materials with higher added value’. The main objective of the project is to stabilise the quality research team or research teams of the applicant in the knowledge field “plant production, plant and animal genetics” and to allow to realise the activity of independent research and development in the period up to 31.12.2019 with the relevant project outputs. The aim of the project is also to obtain input for the design and implementation of adaptation measures to minimise the consequences of climate change in agriculture and landscape. The solution will assess the course and effect of the agricultural crop production process in interaction with the impact of different farming methods in terms of the adverse effects of weather conditions in the current period and the predicted climate change scenarios. The issue will also focus on the creation of efficient crop production technologies that meet current production, environmental and economic requirements. The project will focus on plant cultivation and utilisation technologies for sustainable, efficient and regionally differentiated agricultural production with a greater presence of cereals in crop rotation, with an emphasis on preserving the ecological and productive functions of the soil. Using effective analytical and biochemical methods, primary food sources will also be monitored in the present project in terms of the content of selected quality parameters. The nutritional value of primary raw materials will be monitored comprehensively and will be made available to other processors of these resources using modern information systems. The focus will be on traditional, local and seasonal primary raw materials and added value substances with functional and biological significance. The results of the research will be presented effectively at the level of professional and general public, in order to raise awareness of the population of the Slovak Republic. The key problems raised for solving the project will be the use of available tools to improve the economic parameters and properties of genotypes of selected important crops using cell breeding methods through modern biotechnological approaches using plant genes as well as genes with species-distant organisms. At the same time, the project will increase the efficiency of the creation of unique genotypes (varieties) of wheat by including molecular (DNA) markers in the selection process at parental partner level, selected generations of newly bred lines and final lines prepared for varietal testing and registration. The aim will also be to prepare genotypes (lines) of different breeding stages to which effective genes of resistance to selected fungal and viral pathogens will be introduced, while monitoring plant reactions with phytopathogenic fungi as well as plant interactions with economically significant fungal phytopatogens. The project will also include proteomic analyses of agricultural crops to determine the purity and authenticity of different varieties for the provision of advice to growers, propagators and seed processors, as well as the characterisation of poppy seeds through the use of genomic (forensic) approaches for the purpose of characterising (differentiating or confirming identity).
