The assessment and management of flood risks is an obligation for Greece in accordance with the requirements of Directive 2007/60/EC, as transposed into national law by Joint Ministerial Decision (JMD) H.P. 31822/1542/Ε103/2010 (Government Gazette, Series II, No 1108/21.07.2010). The purpose of the Directive is to adopt and implement management measures aimed at reducing flood risks and mitigating these impacts on human health, economic activities, the environment and cultural heritage. According to the Joint Ministerial Decision, the geographical unit implementing Directive 2007/60/EC for the assessment and management of flood risks is the River Basin Area or, otherwise, a Water District. In particular, a preliminary flood risk assessment is drawn up for all the water districts in Greece, a list of historical and historical flooding hazards is drawn up and the zones of high flood risk are identified, i.e. the areas in which significant flood risks exist or are likely to arise in the future. Flood risk maps and flood risk maps for various hydrological scenarios are then drawn up for zones of potential flood risk in accordance with Directive 2007/60/EC. These maps show flooding (extension, speed, depth) and which (population, activities) are affected.
