The project concerns the construction of a central composting unit of pre-sorted organic fraction of waste, the creation of a network for the collection of biowaste, as well as the creation of a domestic composting network. The Composting Unit will be built at the place of Rimbella of the Municipality of Archanes-Asterousia. The household composting network will be developed in remote areas with low urban density, where it is considered difficult to collect waste from a waste disposal truck in the municipality. The Composting Unit and the equipment provided for in the framework of the project is necessary to promote the objectives of the updated National Waste Management Plan (Directive 2008/98/EC) and the Regional Waste Management Plan of Crete (REMP). The focus in the PECA is on the greatest possible diversion of materials from burial, with the objective of achieving a separate collection and diversion from burial of 40 % of the pre-sorted organic fraction of Urban Solid Waste (SWW) in 2020. These objectives are planned to be achieved by composting all organic materials entering the facilities and pursuing the utilisation of the compost produced in quality uses.The creation of a pre-selected organic ASA composting plant in the area of the Municipality of Archanes Asterousia, where there is already a Sanitary Landfill and there is additional space for the construction of the proposed plant, is a necessary option for the Prefecture of Heraklion and the project area, which is included in the design of the PESEAK. The project has a 20-month implementation schedule and, in addition to the above mentioned above, includes support services for the implementation of the Technical Council and the duration of the project.
