Interconnection of the Cyclades with the Continental Interconnected High Voltage System

The project of interconnection of the Cyclades is a technically complex project, which will ensure the reliable and adequate supply of electricity to the islands of Syros, Paros, Mykonos and Naxos for the next 30-40 years. The project achieves the future secure supply of the islands of the Cyclades, which is hampered by the limited capacity to install new local production (SPA) on these islands for environmental reasons. The cost of production (substituting oil with gas) and therefore the cost of electricity needed to meet demand is reduced. Environmental nuisance on the islands is minimised by avoiding the construction of aerial GMs. The project creates the necessary infrastructure to realise the significant potential of wind energy in the Aegean Sea. This is a project of strategic national importance with great added value. The project has been designated by Ministerial Decision (November 2006) as a project of “general importance for the country’s economy”.
