The Project consists of the design, construction and equipment of a new multi-purpose oceanographic vessel for the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), which expands its operational capacity, and allows it to address new responsibilities and challenges in the field of oceanographic research globally ._x000D_ _x000D_ The new vessel will have the capacity to work in a multidisciplinary context both on renewable resources and on the functioning of ecosystems and oceanographic and environmental characteristics. But first of all, the new vessel, due to its ability to work in deep ocean waters, will allow the realization of several lines of research that are considered fundamental. Knowledge of the deep waters, of the habitats of the seabed and of life and their characteristics in those funds, remains a technological challenge. Likewise, this global capacity of this vessel will allow to explore remote areas and polar zones (the latter in summer). On the other hand, the new vessel will offer other work possibilities such as the discovery and exploration of wrecks, archaeological sites and / or other non-renewable resources. The project has a total investment of € 85,445,058, and will be developed over a period of six (6) years._x000D_ _x000D_ The project will be located in Cádiz (Spain), where the new ship's base of operations will be located. The choice of Cádiz as an operational port satisfies the IEO's need to cover the southern Atlantic zone and the Canary Islands and the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea where, via the Suez Canal, access the Indian and Pacific Ocean. In addition, the area of the Gulf of Cádiz is scientifically of special relevance due to its proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar where it communicates with the Mediterranean Sea, in addition to making possible one of its strategic activities such as the study of tunas.
