X-ray computerised nanotomography (nano-CT) equipment

Computed nano-tomography (nano-CT) is a non-destructive X-ray analytic method that allows to obtain 3D images of the internal and external structure of an object. The basic fundament of CT is the detection of material density contrast in response to the excitation with X-rays. The requested nano-CT equipment would allow obtaining high contrast 3D images with a submicron resolution (<500 nm) of samples belonging to numerous scientific fields (objects with size up to 300 mm x 400 mm): Earth Sciences (paleontology, mineralogy, soils, ...), Materials Sciences (polymers, composites, ceramics, construction materials, catalysts,...) , Engineering and Electronics (batteries, semiconductors, transistors, fuel cells, ...), Life Sciences (biomaterials, drugs, zoology, botany, ...), Archeology and Cultural Heritage, ... The 3D reconstructions allow: quantification of defects, organization of phases in composites materials, studies of permeability, connectivity and porosity, analysis of microstructures, characteristics which are not always observed by microscopic techniques (SEM, AFM). The acquisition of this equipment will cover the growing demand of users requesting this type of analysis at the X-ray diffraction laboratory of the Central Research Support Services (SCAI) not only research groups from the University of Málaga, but also from external users due to the unique characteristics of this equipment.
