The RACE4PLA project aims to develop a new management model for biodegradable PLA packaging, which will optimise and optimise its end of life in a more efficient and sustainable way. Technically, this ambitious project has been proposed to develop a new methodology for the recovery of the different PLA packaging developed in this project, where a protocol for the management of waste of these packaging will be developed that encompasses the whole process, from the detection and classification of these packaging in the waste management plant to the management of its end of life and recovery, deepening the novel concept of bioincreasing the composting process, and the mechanical and chemical recycling of PLA, so that it will deepen a global vision and investigate all possible recovery pathways for this waste, thus increasing the value and current profitability of waste treatment operations within a circular economy approach. It also avoids landfill deposition, since, although compostable materials are involved, the times used in accelerated industrial composting plants are not sufficient to allow their degradation and are removed in subsequent compost refining processes. So they are deposited in landfill where they suffer from an anaerobic degrading process, generating biogas with the corresponding odours, emission of greenhouse gases and risks of fire and explosion.
