WE ARE CURRENTLY WITNESSING AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF HETEROGENEOUS PROCESSOR DESIGNS THAT, WHILE ALREADY FOR COMMON USE ON MOBILE DEVICES, NOW PROMISE IMPORTANT ADVANCES ALSO IN THE RESOLUTION OF TRADITIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS, AS WELL AS IN DATA PROCESSING APPLICATIONS THAT ARE BEHIND THE GROWING USE OF CLOUD RESOURCES. THESE CHANGES ARE MOTIVATED, ON THE ONE HAND, BY THE NEED TO INCREASE THE PERFORMANCE OF CURRENT COMPUTING SYSTEMS TO DEAL WITH INCREASINGLY COMPLEX APPLICATIONS OR WITH A GREATER VOLUME OF DATA; AND, ON THE OTHER HAND, THE LIMITS ON ENERGY CONSUMPTION IMPOSED BY CMOS TECHNOLOGY. THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SPECIALISATION OF COMPUTING RESOURCES, THROUGH HETEROGENEOUS SYSTEMS AND PROCESSORS THAT COMBINE TWO OR MORE TYPES OF ARCHITECTURES, WITH THE ABILITY TO PROVIDE HIGHER PERFORMANCE WHILE MAINTAINING LIMITED CONSUMPTION. IN RETURN, PARALLEL PROGRAMMING OF THESE SYSTEMS HAS BECOME SIGNIFICANTLY COMPLICATED, PARTICULARLY IN AREAS SUCH AS LOAD BALANCING AND DATA MOVEMENT.
