Since March 2011, the historical activities of the Clermontese university community on the theme of mobility of people, goods and machines have been stamped “Laboratoire d’Excellence”. This prestigious label was awarded by an international jury to the IMobS3 project, which fed 7 laboratories backed by the Université Clermont Auvergne, the CNRS, the Institut Français de Mécanique Avancée, Irstea, SIGMA Clermont-Ferrand and the local branch of the CETE in Lyon. They are recognised for their skills in robotics, mechanics, computer science, bioprocesses, information materials, disturbed environmental perception, mathematics, acceptability and ergonomics of new systems. Thus, at the interface of the respective disciplinary fields and in the interest of sustainable development, three ambitious challenges are addressed: the development of smart vehicles and machines; the realisation of innovative supervisory systems and the development of new (bio)energy production processes. These 3 challenges are based on the mobilisation of a scientific community of nearly 300 people that is customary for industrial collaborations. Thus, this Laboratory of Excellence enjoys strong support, notably from Michelin, Aubert & Duval, Nexter, Constellium, the European Space Agency... and many local SMEs-SMI as well as the Viaméca competitiveness cluster, which has markets.
