SMAM: Smart materiau by additive manufacturing — Smart Material in Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (3D printing) makes it possible to obtain structures by controlling their shape through topological optimisation technologies and to some extent by controlling the properties of the materials made. Optimising shape and materials to maximise structural performance is a major industrial challenge in automotive and aeronautics. In the field of optimising the properties of the material to improve mechanical strength at rupture, promising results have been obtained by ETH and UT for polymer materials made by “Fuse Deposition Modeling”. By judiciously driving the material deposition trajectories it is possible to increase the mechanical performance by 30 %. The main objective of this research project is twofold, as it will, on the one hand, extend this work to treat three-dimensional structures and, on the other hand, take advantage of the advantages of new technologies for sintering of a polymer/metal powder complex. This project should allow the development of a clearly defined design and manufacturing process and an operational intelligent material for highly stressed mechanical parts requiring this structural optimisation.
