Reception and tourism valorisation of the saline of Frontignan

A vestige of a bygone saline activity, the site of the former salins of Frontignan, property of the Conservatoire du littoral, is located in the commune of Frontignan. At the interface of the sea and the land, the Salins are bordered by the Gardiole massif to the north and by the pond of Ingril to the south, itself in relation to the Mediterranean Sea. This particular geographical location associated with salinar activity, which has shaped this site over the centuries, gives the site a quite remarkable flat landscape identity. Once entirely dedicated to salt production, this site is now a protected natural area of more than 200 ha, whose natural riches and strong identity linked to its salinary past, make it an area of great heritage wealth. The Salins site is co-managed by Thau Agglo, the Mediterranean EID and the commune of Frontignan. It is very frequented by a diverse audience: tourists, inhabitants, schools,... The Petite Randonnée Trail, which crosses it and connects it to the nearby site of the Bois des Aresquiers, is one of the busiest in the department of Hérault (70,000 visitors per year). A landscape study carried out with all the stakeholders of the site to identify the investments to be made that will improve the conditions of access and legibility of the site, to preserve the traces of saline activity, by enhancing the built heritage, and to improve the landscape visions of the built island and the site.
