Biogas-RIO (Biogaz Research and Innovation in Occitania)

Biogas is a storageable, flexible energy that allows stable and predictable production in the short or long term. The deposits available in France are mainly found in agricultural co-products and industrial and household waste. Nevertheless, since the energy recovery of biomass has low added value, this sector requires solutions to improve plant performance and productivity. Each methanisation operation is a specific ecosystem (inputs/biology/technology) that needs to be optimised, especially since the current trend is towards regional methanisation projects, depending on the available deposits. The ambition of the Biogaz-RIO project is to provide solutions to better control input management and operating parameters of the anaerobic digestion process, as well as the development of systems for data acquisition and processing, control and supervision of facilities. The Biogaz-RIO project is carried out by the laboratory LBE (Laboratory of Biotechnology of the Environment), the own research unit of the centre Occitanie-Montpellier of the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), an integral part of the platform Biotechnology and Biorefinery EnEnvironnement (BIO2E) — specialised in the treatment and recovery of effluents and solid residues of agricultural, industrial and urban origin.
