Regaining a demographic dynamism in Causses and Cévennes

The territory of PETR Causses and Cévennes, located in the north west of the Gard, on the foothills of the Massif de l’Aigoual, has a long tradition of welcoming new populations. The population decline of the villages could be halted thanks to the arrival of neo-rurals in the early 1970s. This trend has continued to date but has not been very regular over the past 50 years. The territory is also faced with the end of the era of the textile industry, which has provided considerable work until the 2000s. The small town of Vigan, the chief borough and former local capital of the low nylon industry, is still suffering from the consequences of this crisis with the closure of shops, the loss of inhabitants and a visible phenomenon of impoverishment. The elected representatives of the PETR wish to relaunch a reception policy as part of a global project to enhance attractiveness, both internally, with measures to re-qualification infrastructure and services, housing and public and external areas, with measures to promote the territory. The objectives of this comprehensive policy are to attract new inhabitants, generate economic development and increase tourist traffic in the territory.
