Aérial’s FEERIX® project is based on state-of-the-art electron acceleration and high-energy X-ray generation. An extension of the building of almost 800 m² which required more than 3 000 m³ of concrete, with walls of almost 3 m, will accommodate the Rhodotron: an electron accelerator from a technology developed by CEA and manufactured by the Belgian company IBA. Weighing nearly 11 tonnes, Rhodotron will study, on an original configuration with two separate beam lines (electron and X-rays), all multisectoral ionisation applications such as sterilisation of medical devices, improvement of polymer properties, and ionisation of food. This tool is intended for research and development and training. It has characteristics very similar to those of industrial equipment, which allows the optimal transfer of results to industry. This new tool around ionisation technologies complements the many equipment and laboratories already existing on its site and opens up both important and strategic perspectives. Designated IAEA Collaboration Centre among 25 structures worldwide, Aérial strengthens its role as an indispensable partner for major regional, national and international projects. Cross-border partnerships with Swiss and German stakeholders will be strengthened.
