Relocation of the Bas-Rhin food bank

Founded in 1985, the Bas-Rhin Food Bank tries to respond to the food emergency and relies on food aid as a lever for aid for integration. The Food Bank was founded by the grouping of 12 local associations and is based on a fundamental principle: combat food waste and redistribute to people in precarious situations. Approximately 2000 tonnes of food are recovered each year: 48 % of large distributors, 16 % of collection, 10 % of industrialists, 8 % of local producers, 16 % of Europe and 2 % of the French state. Through its network of associations, the Banque Alimentaire supports 45,000 people each year. Since 2005, the association has also been an integration site and hires staff with various profiles but wishing to integrate logistics professions. In 2016, 60 active volunteers completed 36,305 hours of volunteering (including 6,000 hours related to the collection). A team of permanent employees made up of 4 people strengthen the organisation. Although with an area of 2 200 m², the current warehouse in Strasbourg does not offer the security conditions for handling 2100 tonnes of food. Now located on Rue de la Plain des Butchers in the Meinau, the Food Bank is studying the relocation of its business at 9 rue de l’industrie in Illkirch in a space of 3.200 m².
