Biolaakso II — Centre of Excellence in Chemistry and Bioeconomy

The objective of the Biolaakso II project is to increase the competitiveness of the region of Central Ostrobothnia, which is rich in natural resources, and also of Finland through new know-how, innovations and business activities related to chemistry and bioeconomy. The aim of the project is to build an impressive centre of expertise in chemistry and bioeconomy in Central Ostrobothnia, whose unique competence profile brings national added value. The project will give concrete expression to the smart specialisation strategy of Central Ostrobothnia, taking into account value chains from individual producers to large-scale industry, as well as increasing the dialogue between scientific, commercial, eco-social, spatial planning and other aspects. To achieve this, common research tips will be clarified, closer regional cooperation and more international networks will be established. Biolaakso’s chemistry and bioeconomy research groups as well as companies are increasing their innovative capacity and potential, thanks to the long-term business cooperation culture and practices between companies and research groups. In order to promote business-driven innovations and development packages, flexible and easy practices will be created for rapid research, experimentation and piloting in cooperation between companies and RDI organisations. Innovations will be mapped and refined with the help of the ideal boss, as well as helping companies to become project partners in EU programmes. Increase the full exploitation of research platforms in Central Ostrobothnia and infrastructure cooperation between research institutions through infrastructure exploration and sharing practices. The centre of excellence will be raised at regional, national and international level, as well as sharing information and influencing strategies and programmes. The shared use of the actors in the region, their joint teams and infrastructure will enable the potential of research, development and education to be exploited more fully. The development of know-how also attracts new skills in the region. As the region becomes more well-known, its attractiveness as an investment destination will increase and new companies will be created through the implementation of the ideal concept, as well as studies, experiments and pilots.
