Industrial symbiosis

The aim of the project is to identify the circular economy potential and bioeconomy know-how in the regions, and to help to translate the circular economy potential into functional symbioses. The promotion of industrial symbiosis supports the implementation of the National Resources Strategy and the objectives of the Government Programme by promoting the sustainable use of natural resources and the material cycle, improving the conditions for the recovery of waste and by-products and creating new business opportunities. The Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe (COM(2011) 571, p. 6) sets out the objective that Member States should help companies to work together to make the best use of the waste and by-products they produce. The National Material Efficiency Programme makes the promotion of industrial symbiosis one of the eight measures aimed at promoting sustainable growth through material efficiency. The Programme Paper proposes the implementation of a three-year approach to industrial symbioses. This project responds to this proposal.Cursor Oy will act as a regional coordinator in Southern Kymenlaakso and Päijät-Häme to bring industrial symbiosis activities nationally led by Motiva and Sitra to companies in the regions. The potential of the circular economy, i.e. the resources available and those businesses are looking for, will be mapped through business interviews, statistical data and workshops that will be organised in several locations. The national FISS operating model can also make use of the previously completed BioA simulation model for the waste and side streams included in the model, if necessary. After the workshops, the data will be collected in a closed Synergie database to search for symbiosis also outside the workshops. The system is available nationwide to regional coordinators and Motiva. Companies will receive tailor-made reports from the workshop for subsequent direct business-to-business contacts and, if necessary, guidance for expert guidance to implement symbiosis. Cursor is responsible for the establishment of regional networks and the practical implementation of FISS activities in the above area. The aim of the national operating model is to help companies and other actors to improve mutual resource utilisation and the closure of material cycles, as well as to generate new business activities. The operating model is primarily aimed at companies, but may also involve public or third-sector actors, as well as providers of solutions and skills. The aim is to develop well-functioning cross-sector and sectoral boundaries and to maximise added value and effectiveness.
