Innovation hub for 3D manufacturing

3D printing has been used to produce prototypes since the 1990s. Today, it is already used in production in many industries around the world. Finland is clearly lagging behind the rest of the world in 3D printing business models. In addition, information about 3D printing opportunities is fragmented and does not reach a large number of companies."Gartner predicts 100 % growth for 3D printers and an increase in sales of over $13 billion per year by 2018. Sales in 2014 are already estimated to exceed the threshold of 100,000 units clearly. Growth is expected to continue strong both in a business market where 3D printing integrates into manufacturing processes instead of current product development, as well as in hobby/home market." The project’s ideas have utilised 3D production technologies from ESF and ERDF projects, and the project has already been presented to partners and participants who have gained valuable knowledge in project design. The project supports the emergence of 3D Production Innovation Hub 3D, which is the lead in Kymenlaakso, a real new innovation centre, operating environment and platform that is based in Kotkan-Haamina. The project supports the creation of 3D Innovation and Competence Management in Finland. research, training and seminars in the field, design and advisory services, demonstration space for 3D equipment and printouts, scanning services, use of printing services and equipment, subcontracting and finishing, equipment sales, office space and business accelerator services. The project responds to the priorities of the Kymenlaakso programme ‘to live from the northern growth zone’ by providing new innovative services and action line 1. The project supports new entrepreneurship and creates conditions, especially in the application of ICT and new technologies.
