CEMIS (Centre for Measurement and Information Systems) was founded in 2010 by two universities (University of Oulu and University of Jyväskylä), two research and service organisations (VTT and CSC) and Kajaani University of Applied Sciences. CEMIS has prepared development project plans for 2017-2018. CEMIS is seeking funding for four parallel projects aimed at developing new technology solutions (bioms) for Kainuu bioeconomy and measurement companies, reliable measurement methods for the environmental impacts of mines and industrial processes (KAIMIT), creating international technology business in Kainuu (complainant) and new product and service solutions for the sports, well-being and health sector (LIIKUTPA project). The aim of the project, which is coordinated by the University of Jyväskylä, is to produce measurement and testing solutions that enable self-sufficient well-being and health care, the development of public social and health care towards remote and self-diagnostics, and the development of Finnish high-level sports and sports technology business. The project will run for two years and will be implemented as a group project between all five CEMIS actors. The project is linked to KAMK’s Complaint — International Technology Business project. Project measures: 1: Sports technology (smart skiing equipment) and advanced athlete testing environments, 2: Non-invasive sensors and well-being measurements: Smart home care and well-being, physical activity applications, technology and system development, sensitive health data, 3: Serene games and virtual environments: Real video as part of virtual environment training, processing large amounts of data, 4: Business development (link to the complainant project): project and business cooperation, 5: Coordination of the group project. Results: 2 new spin-offs in the field of sports or health technology, 2 new technologies commercialised to existing companies, 1 new service product, 8 new business partners, 1 promising biosensor research project for the future, 4 peer-reviewed scientific articles (measurements of nutrition and strain), 1 doctoral dissertation on saliva biosensor measurements, 2 professional journals or conference articles (measurements of physical activity, virtual reality technology), project funding 2017-2018: international 1.2 MEUR (2 projects on physical activity, health or well-being), national 1.5 MEUR (2-3 follow-up projects on health and well-being and 1 follow-up to virtual reality technology), business financing 0.5 MEUR.The total cost of the project is EUR 1 431 000, of which ERDF funding of EUR 1 001 700 is requested from the Kainuu Union and EUR 429 300 is municipal, own and enterprise funding. The project supports the specific objective of the Finnish Structural Funds Programme Sustainable Growth 2014-2020 TL2 to develop research, knowledge and innovation hubs based on regional strengths (well-being, health and physical activity technology, measuring and information technology competence). The project also supports the strategic objectives of the Kainuu programme.
