New products from the forest

Finland’s National Forest Strategy 2025 and Finland’s National Bioeconomy Strategy have a wide impact on forest use, forest certification criteria, natural resource planning for state forests, regional ecological planning, regional forest programmes and forest owners’ decision-making activities. New tools and tools are needed to assess the impact of activities in order to know if the effects of the instruments are desired and to consider how the widest possible range of benefits from forests, i.e. ecosystem services, can be produced sustainably. In addition, there is a need for the compilation of research data and experiments, as well as for the introduction of data in the field. From the ecosystem services provided by forests, natural products have the potential to coexist with wood, so that the overall benefits of forests can be increased. However, taking natural products into account in forest planning requires special knowledge and information on the potential of production to improve the profitability of farms. This project promotes sustainable and diversified use of forests and its objectives are:1)Increase the diversity of forest ecosystem services by taking into account the needs of society, private forest owners and natural product entrepreneurs2)Produce information on the parallel production of wood and other ecosystem services, especially natural products3)Develops the Forest Meter tool to support the diverse production of selected ecosystem services, which shows changes in ecosystem services as a result of forest use(4)Develop, pilot and guide forest planning that takes into account natural products in private forests5)Develops the profitability and opportunity cost calculation of the production of natural productsThe project consists of five work packagesWork Package 1. Regional level forecast models and calculations for selected ecosystem servicesWork Package 2. Development of the Forest Meter web applicationWork package 3. Farm-specific forest planning that takes into account natural products Development of methods for inventory, monitoring and calculation of natural products In the short term, the project supports the implementation of regional forest programmes and the decision of individual forest owners. In the long term, the project will serve as a tool for sustainable bioeconomy and regional development that is able to take into account the needs and priorities of forests that change over time. The benefits of the project are realised both at the regional level and at the level of the private forest owner. The Forest Meter helps policy makers and stakeholders to consider what benefits the forest wants and what practical measures are taken to produce them. The Forest Meter offers forest operators the opportunity to simultaneously examine the effects of different forest use scenarios on timber production and other ecosystem services. The know-how of forest planners and forest owners is improved with regard to the consideration of natural products in forest planning. The calculations carried out on the pilot farms provide preliminary information on the profitability of producing natural products in private forests and support the natural products sector as a result of the diversification of forest management. The project will intensify cooperation between research organisations and universities in Northern Finland so that research and education in the field better serve the needs of the region’s business. The key information produced by the project will be collected, popularised and disseminated widely for the use of stakeholders. The main project will be implemented by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). The participants are the Lapland University of Applied Sciences, the Finnish Forest Centre (North Service Area), Oulu University of Applied Sciences and the University of Eastern Finland.
