The aim of the Smart Production Technology Learning and Development Environment — ÄLYPAJA project is to create a new integrated development environment for the Lapland University of Applied Sciences, where engineering education, RDI and service business and companies in the region meet. The environment will enable training in line with the new curriculum to be introduced in 2017 and ensure that the machine technology sector will be able to respond to the opportunities and challenges of digitalisation in the future. The environment supports RDI and business cooperation and new innovations, thus also contributing to the creation of jobs in the sector. The target group of the learning and development environment includes in particular SMEs in the region. Figure 1 shows the linkage of the Smartpag to the operating environment and Figure 2 describes the areas of activities of the Smartpag and the common themes that cross them through the training offer. The Smartpad in the centre of Figure 1 consists of four areas of operation: 1. Automatic machines, 2. Integrated product development, 3. Digital production and 4. Integration. The areas of activity are strongly interlinked and are linked by common strategic objectives such as digitalisation, product management, energy and environment as part of the promotion of the smart use of natural resources. In addition to engineering training in mechanical, electrical and information technology, the main users of the Smartpaja are the RDI activities of the University of Applied Sciences, companies and other partners operating in the area, as well as customers of the service business. The Smart Workshop forms an intelligent and diverse entity that integrates different actors together. The Smart Workshop project has been the result of years of development. At present, machinery and production technology laboratories do not serve their users in a way that meets the requirements of time. The equipment stock is traditional and old and cannot be connected to modern digital systems. The operating environment of the Smartpaja created in the project is a whole in which different actors can work together by sharing knowledge and know-how. The smart shop’s machines, devices and software are connected to the network and various other information management systems, creating a truly digital and intelligent system. The premises of the Smartpaja are made possible by the extensive property change planned by the Lapland University of Applied Sciences. The cost of real estate changes is borne by the Lapland University of Applied Sciences. Real estate change makes it possible to build a new learning environment. The Smart Workshop project ensures that the equipment base of the new learning and development environment forms a modern and digital entity. The environment supports the strategies of the Lapland University of Applied Sciences and the Province of Lapland in the best possible way. The environment integrates operations into a whole in order to create new innovations more efficiently and to provide the best possible framework for cooperation between stakeholders. As a measure, this project will design a Smart Workshop environment that takes into account the integration of different areas of activity into a digital entity that connects the users of the environment. The investment studies required by the environment are carried out and investments in machinery, equipment and software are carried out. The themes of the Smartpaja project’s investments consist of the above-mentioned identified, interlinked development packages, such as Automatic Machinery, Integrated Product Development, Digital Production and Integration, as shown in Figure 2 of Annex 2. Cross-cutting themes for all of these are digitalisation, circular economy, product management and energy efficiency. The project results in a Smartpaja environment where the core mechanical and production engineering functions of the University of Applied Sciences are combined in a way that enables high-quality engineering training, teaching and RDI integration, efficient service operations and cooperation in accordance with the new curriculum. The environment will be designed and implemented in such a way that it is ready to meet the challenges and new opportunities of digitalisation. Smartpaja acts as an effective source of innovation, enabling the development of Lapland’s know-how and thus the creation of new jobs.
