Urban streams of Hupisaari as a meeting point for innovation

The primary objective of this project is to create a vibrant place for different uses from the Hupisaari brook and park area in the centre of Oulu, where the added value of water is used more effectively. The project aims to develop operating models based on nature experiences and citizen perception, targeting both residents and tourists. The aim of the project is to develop a park area closely linked to its city centre and its activities in accordance with sustainable values 1) as an environment for nature education 2) as an environment for tourism and recreation, and 3) as an environment for information media. At the heart of everything is solutions that combine science and digital innovations with experience-oriented near-nature experiences. The project will develop a unique learning environment and learning products in the environment that involve ICT in experiential and investigative learning. The project strengthens cooperation between the research institute, ICT companies and operators in the tourism sector, for example through innovation workshops, and supports the development of new service concepts by identifying the current state and challenges of the operating environment and exploring related solutions. The project is demoting technical solutions to enable open and as real-time information on research for different users and aims to introduce solutions that make it easy for urban residents to participate in the observation of creeks and fish (e.g. mobile applications, descriptive fish operating model). Multidisciplinary activities are also made visible through events, active communication and marketing. The project produces a new kind of learning environment and learning game and namefish action model for the use of environmental education and, for example, education and camp school tourism, preliminary studies and solutions that promote the business of the tourism industry, as well as solutions promoting real-time data transfer and citizen perception. The project utilises the strengths of Oulu and North Ostrobothnia as well as the best local know-how and know-how related to vibrant migratory fish stocks and current waters, environmental education, tourism and ict applications. The project will increase the visibility of the region as a hub of research, knowledge and innovation in these areas and a field of cross-sectoral cooperation. The approach to be developed can be applied more widely in research and development projects in the urban bioeconomy.
