Artificial intelligence is a new technology, the potential of which has only recently started to materialise as a result of increased data reserves and increased computing efficiency. Finland is well placed to exploit the growth potential of artificial intelligence due to, for example, the level of digitalisation and the high level of education in Finland. However, making use of this potential requires choices and effective implementation. Development and competition in the field of artificial intelligence is fierce and a country like Finland must make clear choices and network internationally. The same applies at regional level. In order to be able to exploit the potential of artificial intelligence, Southwest Finland must choose its own priorities and be networked both nationally and internationally, so that it can effectively pursue the interests of companies in its region. The higher education institutions in the region have invested heavily in research and teaching in this field. In addition, we have large companies with artificial intelligence (AI) at the heart of t&k activities. At the moment, however, action is fragmented and a vision of the common direction, strengths and vision of the region is lacking. Therefore, the potential cannot be fully exploited.V-S Artificial Intelligence Network aims to create networks and tools in Southwest Finland to make the most of the potential of artificial intelligence to safeguard business life, competitiveness and economic growth. To achieve this, the project measures have been divided into three action packages.1) Creating an AI network in Southwest FinlandSituation of the actual Finnish AI actors, networks in the area and companies that develop AI and companies that are willing and able to apply AI to enhance their operations. At the same time, we will create a common picture of the region’s strengths and potential in terms of AI, both in the short and long term. Create tools, in particular for positive structural change, communication of the strengths of sectors and the exploitation of artificial intelligence.2) Capacity building of enterprises in the regionBuilding together the key players in the region and establishing channels for exchange of information and forums for regular gatherings; In addition, through workshops, the region’s AI application capabilities and understanding of its impact on business efficiency will be developed. Organise matchmaking events bringing developers and applicators together and increasing market dialogue between the city and businesses.3) Connecting the AI network to national and international networks and programmesTransfers regional actors to national networks. Based on the priority choices made in the past, it is ensured that Finnish companies have a clear and strong role in Finland’s artificial intelligence development. In addition, the role and representation of companies in the region will be ensured in the actions and lobbying of the National Working Group on Artificial Intelligence. International contacts are a prerequisite for a country the size of Finland to succeed in an AI competition. Based on the choices made in previous policy packages, we will find international partners around the Baltic Sea that are best suited to Southwest Finland and its strengths. As a result, the project will create the necessary networks and tools in Southwest Finland to make the most of the potential of artificial intelligence to secure business life, competitiveness and economic growth. As a result of the project, companies that develop and apply artificial intelligence in Finland are more competitive. The project creates a regional network of AI partners, connects it to national and international networks, and creates a regional vision that guides the actual Finnish AI work, its strengths and trends. With regard to horizontal principles, the project supports, in particular, increased well-being, mobility and logistics, as well as circular economy/resource efficiency through the application of AI solutions.
