Climate districts — new climate solutions in Joensuu

The city of Joensuu has one of Europe’s most ambitious goals to be carbon neutral as early as 2025. The city’s climate programme (http://www.joensuu.fi/ilmasto-ohjelma) has been implemented with, for example, the Climate Market for Low Carbon Decarbonisation project and the development of a learning environment following the carbon footprint. The first pilot has been the Karhunmäki School Climate Quarter project to continue the development of low-carbon solutions and experiments in selected climate districts. The blocks serve as pilot platforms for the development of low-carbon approaches. The project communicates climate issues in event-oriented ways of the Pop-up Climate Market and develops climate communication more widely by creating a climate portal. Green and low-carbon entrepreneurship will be supported, for example, through sectoral sparring and low-carbon experimentation. The schools of Karhunmäki and Nepenmäki are involved in the project as their own blocks. They are new types of learning environments whose carbon footprint is monitored using modern building technology. The project produces educational packages that help the information obtained from buildings to be used in the environmental education of primary school. At the school of Nepenmäki, the concept of the learning environment is broader than that normally understood in the school context. The regional centre for libraries, culture and sports services affects a wider group of people than primary school-age learners. The target groups in the climate district are SMEs and micro-enterprises in the Joensuu region, startup companies and communities and local residents. Making children and young people aware of the climate impact of different activities is important and teachers have an important role to play in forming attitudes and sustainable approaches. Particular emphasis will be placed on target groups relevant for jobs based on sustainable economic growth and for innovative sustainable solutions.
