The aim of the project is to increase the turnover of natural product SMEs operating in North Karelia, both by utilising certifications in sales and marketing (LUOMU, FSC, PEFC) and by developing forest resource-based tools for forest owners to increase the production and market entry of natural products. In addition to the LUOMU certification of natural products, a model is produced in which certification could also be used in the marketing of construction wood and thus further expand the organic brand and its competitive advantage to a wider range of forest products. Finland’s environmental conditions and the way in which forestry is practised have created an operating environment that benefits not only the food industry but also the cosmetics industry and companies providing tourism services. Finland’s forests can be certified up to 97-99 %. Certification has already been carried out for 12.2 million hectares located mainly in the provinces of Lapland, Kainuu and North Ostrobothnia. Although the largest natural product companies in North Karelia operate on a national scale, there is no LUOMU certification for forests in the North Karelia region, even if up to 1.5 million hectares of forests can be certified. The initiative for forest certification has come directly from SMEs in the region. At present, both companies and regional economies lose the significant added value of certification. According to MARSI statistics, almost 90 % of the national mushroom harvest is collected from North Karelia. In the case of buckles, the proportion is even higher. The added value of organic certification for the SME selling the final product is product-specific, but according to the reports of the Organic Association, it can vary from up to 30 % to 100 %. In addition, organic production is becoming increasingly popular in export markets in Central and Southern Europe. In addition to organic certification, the project examines the use of FSC and PEFC certificates already in force in the marketing of natural products, thereby creating a competitive advantage for the region’s SMEs, whose products are produced organically and in accordance with the standards of safe and sustainable forestry. Organic certification can also bring clear economic benefits to the wood product industry, as already LUOMU certification is used in the production of Christmas and decorative trees. The project also improves the general operating environment of the natural products sector nationwide by producing virtual and mobile tools for the production and sale of natural products that utilise forest resource data. The service is produced via Metsään.fi or similar website. The measure aims at directing forest owners to sell and actively produce the raw materials needed on the market. This is important as access to raw materials is the most important challenge for expanding and internationalising business in the natural products sector. One of the reasons for this is that the owners of the resource, i.e. forest owners, are not committed to production or are aware of the potential of their forests. The aim of the new tools is to increase production and market entry and thus create a new revenue stream, especially for forest owners by focusing on products that are not covered by everyman’s rights, of which at least birch grass, special mushrooms (Pakuri, Reishi), spruce burdock and resin are important in North Karelia. The most important result of the project in the province is the LUOMU certification of the forests of North Karelia. Its impact on the regional economy comes from SMEs, which, as a result of certification, derive added value to their final products and a competitive advantage over products from other producers. The most important natural product companies in North Karelia focus their products mainly on exports. Nationally significant results and outputs contributing to forest bioeconomy are 1. Tools based on forest resources aimed at securing access to raw materials for companies in the sector and increasing trade between forest owners and businesses, 2. Study and presentation of the concept of FSC and PEFC certification in the sale and marketing of natural products 3. Study and operating model of the LUOMU building/log timber production conditions.
