6Time: Carbon-neutral and resource-wise business areas HNRY

The target of participating cities is to be carbon neutral by 2029-2035 at the latest. The carbon neutrality of an urban area requires the participation of all. This project will pay particular attention to the potential of companies and heavy transport (logistics, on-site machinery) to reduce emissions. Companies in the regions have expressed a strong desire to be involved in climate work and this is seen as a clear competitive advantage. Emissions from machinery and transport related to logistics and construction sites are a significant part of transport emissions in the whole urban area. The aim of the project is to bring together cities (Helsinki, Espoo, Turku, Vantaa) and research institutes that have a common interest in creating carbon-neutral business areas. Pioneering low-carbon companies of members of business networks in the regions will serve as examples and will be further tightened towards carbon neutrality, while also preparing other companies in the regions to launch their own low-carbon measures. The different actors create a diverse network, creating new innovations and enabling new technologies to be applied more widely than just in one location. The project will support the development of business regions and their groups into world-class low-carbon and resource-wise actors. Cities, companies in the region, operators and co-ordinators and providers of innovative solutions will benefit from energy efficient and circular business areas. The project will give concrete expression to what carbon neutrality means for business areas and businesses, and together with the city and other appropriate bodies, effective and effective solutions are being sought for the implementation of carbon neutrality by companies. The project targets sectors that are highly male-dominated, such as construction sites and industrial activities. The project will highlight these areas positively, so that women will continue to seek more and more. The project produces carbon-neutral and resource-wise approaches and pilots to reduce the use of natural resources. In particular, the project will contribute sustainably to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the use of materials, the use of renewable energy, the development of local business structure, mobility and logistics, and environmental expertise. The project consists of four work packages that cut through all seven participants: conceptualisation (TP1), stakeholder cooperation and communication (TP2), piloting (TP3) and indicators, monitoring and evaluation (TP4). All participants participate in all cross-cutting work packages, including experiments, models, etc. in their own target areas. To be jointly exploited. The co-ordinator of the Work Package is responsible for agreeing on the actions to be taken in each area. In the work packages, the participants work in their own target area(s). Helsinki’s goal is to find and implement means and to create concepts to reduce emissions from work sites and port operations, such as creating a road map for a carbon-neutral port. In Espoo, various ways of reducing emissions on the site and improving the recycling of materials are being implemented and piloted. The aim of the Blue Industry Park area in Turku is to build a resource-efficient hub of production and innovation in world-class marine and manufacturing industries. In Vantaa, a concept is being developed with companies in the commercial area, in which cooperation commits companies to develop and implement low-carbon and zero-waste solutions in the long term. In the project, VTT designs and tests operating models that promote carbon neutrality together with companies. The project hosts the largest bioeconomy research environment in the Nordic countries located in Kivenlahti, Espoo. The future platform of the University of Turku’s Future Research Centre in Bastu’s workshops will bring together entrepreneurs and experts in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary manner. The aim is to combine innovations that promote carbon neutrality and resource wisdom with the concrete needs of companies. The result of the project is to reduce emissions from the target areas and to launch processes for the dissemination of a similar approach, including through follow-up activities, which invite non-project actors to engage, for example, in trainings and events. The aim is to spread the lessons learnt from the project elsewhere. The results will result in joint urban guides towards carbon-neutral business areas and infrastructure sites, as well as a roadmap for carbon-neutral port operations. In addition, a communication package for a carbon-neutral business area will be completed. Criteria for carbon-neutral procurement of construction sites are developed for cities and models of low-carbon procurement criteria are produced for companies.
