Jatkäsaari Smart Mobility

Smart Mobility, Smart Mobility, and related technologies and digital services, has huge market potential as an emerging industry. The growth of the industry is estimated at around 20 % per year and the size of the world market is estimated at thousands of billions (e.g. Tekes 2016, TEM: National Transport Growth Programme, Ernst&Young 2017, Sitra megatrend analysis). The annual volume of Finnish mobility services is approximately 50 billion (VTT 2016), so this is a significant economic opportunity, especially for the small and medium-sized sector. Innovations in smart mobility are needed to support tackling transport, mobility and climate challenges. It is known that exploiting this market potential creates new entrepreneurship, employs new employees, generates new mobility services and also brings positive environmental impacts through its solutions, but there are also challenges. A clear shortcoming is the scarcity of SME support models specialising in the theme, the limited number of existing players and the lack of concrete testing platforms required for new services and products to be placed on the market. At the same time, e.g. the National Transport Growth Programme 2018-2022 encourages closer cooperation, the development of test platforms, user-driven piloting of new technological solutions, and support for start-ups and business growth. The main objective of this project is to strengthen the business of Uusimaa SMEs related to Smart Mobility and its underlying innovation and support the creation of new businesses. During the project, the business potential of Smart Mobility will be made visible, including the scaling up of new services and products, and a dedicated support and testing service will be provided for the target group’s companies. Through the testing service, genuine urban environmental references are created for participating companies to help commercialise new services and products. In addition, through co-development models, companies in the target group will be offered confirmation of product and service innovation as well as the creation of new cooperation networks, strengthening financial expertise and contacts with venture capital investors related to the theme of enterprises, and involving both domestic and international experts and different public authorities in the dialogue. This will also support the emergence of new businesses. The project also actively publishes results and activities and produces, among other things, a handbook of experience for participating companies. The results of the project will result in new smart mobility business, new companies and operational cooperation networks. Companies develop smart mobility solutions for the benefit of new regions and their inhabitants and thus also contribute to the achievement of cities’ climate goals. The project strongly supports the “Intelligent Specialisation in Uusimaa” strategy by strengthening the use of new technologies, increasing public-private cooperation, and promoting the uptake of innovative products and services by companies. The project also clearly supports the focus of the Uusimaa 2.0 programme’s successful and responsible business operations. The project is carried out in collaboration between Forum Virium Helsinki, Metropolia The University of Applied Sciences and Helsinki Business Hub, starting on 1 July 2020 as a collaboration between Forum Virium Helsinki and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The project also supports the horizontal objectives of the Structural Funds programme well. For example, special attention has been paid to gender equality: In the planning of the project’s activities, the organisation of events and the acquisition of company participants, as well as in communication in general, special efforts are made to take the female perspective into account. The development of the local business structure and related development of intangible products and services are also an integral part of the project. The main objective of the project is precisely to support the start-up of new enterprises related to the theme and to support existing companies in the development of new products and services. This will strengthen and diversify the existing industrial structure and be directed towards a growing industry. The uptake of intangible products and services will be promoted through the development of new smart mobility services and, for example, the promotion of the deployment of related new technologies. Sustainable mobility and logistics will be promoted by increasing business and services under the theme of smart mobility. In the long term, this will aim at streamlining congested urban centre traffic, reducing the number of cars in urban areas, especially those driven by internal combustion engines, increasing low-carbon mobility, increasing the modularity of services and strengthening cooperation between actors involved in mobility.
