The main objective of the Smart Assa project is to realise the potential of the regions as a platform for the development of low-carbon new businesses, to develop and accelerate new business with low-carbon, scalable and international potential, and to identify new service needs that are based on solving the opportunities and challenges of the station regions (e.g. low-carbon travel chains, safety). The project brings together the development and perspectives of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Hämeenlinna and Riihimäki. Through co-creation, the focus is placed on the regions to develop stations, people’s lifestyles and, for example, sustainable mobility. The project utilises station regions in the development of new business concepts for the development of completely new low-carbon and intelligent operation of stations. Promoting low-carbon business by accelerating the flow of existing solutions, services or ideas in the regions and scaling up into sustainable low-carbon activities in selected stations, other stations and other operating environments — domestic and international.2. Accelerating the emergence of new, low-carbon business and solutions, with a particular focus on the needs, challenges and potential of the regions concerned.3. Implement low-carbon solutions for communities and promote the ability of local residents to make climate-friendly choices. This is done extensively through co-development by municipalities. The Smart Assa project will take full advantage of the potential of the regions as a platform for the development of low-carbon new businesses, bring climate-friendly services along the consumers’ day’s route to stations and develop new business with low carbon, scalable and international potential. The most central measures are to carry out analyses of service needs, examine the locations from the point of view of the location of companies and identify potential actors from the business field. In addition to this, the challenges identified by cities will be identified and a competition for innovation in the station regions will be carried out to create new service solutions based on the identified challenges. Based on the results, the Fiksu Assa event will be carried out at selected stations in cooperation with cities and companies, as well as company-based service experiments. At the same time, efforts will be made to promote a more permanent location of enterprises in positions through a wide range of co-development by municipalities. The result of the project will be analyses of the service needs and the operator field of the station areas, an impressive and recognised Fiksu Assa event for climate-smart solutions, and new low-carbon services and service providers through an innovation competition. They can be scaled up widely at different stations and promoted internationally. As a permanent result, new business will be created in the station areas, which will strengthen the services offered by the stations and improve the attractiveness of public transport, lowering the exchange resistance, thus supporting the development of a low-carbon community.
