Growth from electrification to technology metal cluster

Over the decades, the processing, production and product development of metals, metal products and chemicals that are important for electrification have developed along the River Kokemäenjoki. Metals produced in a technology metal cluster in the region: copper, nickel, gold, silver, cobalt and their refined conductors, magnets and battery chemicals are key components of electrification and low carbon. The demand for these metals and components is growing sharply globally, especially with the electrification of transport. This phenomenon is a real opportunity for Satakunta to grow. From electrification to a technology metal cluster, the project aims to accelerate the growth and investment of the Satakunta technology metal cluster related to electrification. The aim is also to map and describe the electrification business ecosystem of south-west Finland, to apply for common regional competitiveness factors in the ecosystem and to support the objectives of the smart specialisation strategy. The long-term objective is to contribute to the implementation of low-carbon strategies. The project will be implemented as a package of five work packages with a wide range of measures. First, the various phenomena of electrification, enterprises in the region and related growth factors will be identified. The growth description of the technology metal cluster will be prepared as follows. Based on the description, phenomenon survey and workshop work, priority sectors for electrification are selected and proposals for measures to promote growth are defined. Finally, the best and appropriate growth promotion measures will be implemented together with the cluster. In addition, the project will network with electrification experts in Southwest Finland and describe the electrification ecosystem of Southwest Finland in cooperation with Enterprisesalo and Business Turku. The synergistic strengths of Southwest Finland are taken into account in Satakunta’s priorities and proposals for measures. The short-term result is the growth plan/vision of the Satakunta Technology Metal Cluster, which describes the main growth factors of the cluster and the selected priorities as well as the main proposals for measures to promote growth. The key aspect of the growth plan/vision is the demand for technology metals and products created by electrification and low carbon. In the long term, Satakunta’s technology metal cluster grows, renews and diversifys and is at the forefront of the low-carbon transition technologies. Secondly, the business ecosystem of electrification of south-western Finland identified and described in the project can develop and promote the growth of the companies in it.
