Data Refinery

The aim of the Data Refinery project is to make better use of the potential of digitalisation and data from different sources — supporting decision-making and everyday choices of urban residents; — promoting low-carbon and circular economy and enabling new business and RDI activities. The project’s measures1. develop and deploy a new, multidisciplinary and low-carbon, resource-wise, circular urban platform (Dataja Refinery) to collect, refine/analyse, visualise and share data as efficiently as possible; and where new smart solutions can be tested and implemented, thus opening up new business, research and study opportunities2. The feasibility of the first on-platform smart solutions in the development of Savilahti will be explored in the following areas: energy networks and renewable energy, water supply, recycling, parking management and traffic management. In addition, it is possible to store and analyse data collected in other projects on the platform3. Taking into account current trends and enabling the agile further development of the Data Refinery in the future, and the main target groups of the new smart solutions project are: a) low carbon, resource wisdom and circular economy solutions are developed by companies, RDI operators and researchers who want to be offered opportunities to develop, test and productise their smart solutions in Kuopiob) these solutions are utilised by urban group operators and property owners. In addition, indirect target groups are people living, working, studying and visiting in Kuopio, as smart solutions make their everyday life easier, enable smart, environmentally friendly choices and promote innovative activities. The effects of the project are:- There is more data from different sources to support decision-making and everyday choices that promote low-carbon and circular economy, and it is easier to use- The project’s pilot/partner searches offer opportunities for companies to test, develop and product their solutions.- Smart experiments/solutions in Kuopio and Savilahti that promote low-carbon and circular economy. The long-term effects of the project are:- The Smart City Platform opens up new business opportunities and continuous experimentation and RDI activities are facilitated. Improved availability and usability of data related to low-carbon and circular economy contributes to the development of circular economy-related business and new products and services.- The expertise in ICT and smart solutions in the region will increase as the smart city platform develops, and Kuopio becomes more attractive from the point of view of smart solution developers and investors.- The smart city platform developed by a multidisciplinary cooperation network and its applications will increase Kuopio’s awareness both nationally and internationally, and Kuopio will become a more popular location and testing site for companies.
