Responsible tourism in Utsjoki

The main objective of the project is that Utsjoki is an exemplary area of responsible tourism, where the competitiveness of SMEs is strengthened through low-carbon and responsible solutions, know-how and image. As a tourist area, Utsjoki aims to operate as low carbon as possible and to operate responsibly, not only ecologically but also economically and socio-culturally. The tourist area is able to systematically and sustainably contribute to sustainable tourism, encourage the development of sustainable tourism by tourism companies in its territory and further promote the region’s reputation as a sustainable tourist destination. The project is divided into five parts: 1) The current state of responsible tourism in Utsjoki, 2) Towards a carbon-neutral Utsjoki, 3) New responsible tourism products, 4) Responsible tourism from a reindeer husbandry perspective, and 5) Responsible local routes and destinations. The measures of the project are to create a low carbon programme for tourism in Utsjoki, to increase the know-how of low carbon and environmental certification of SMEs through knowledge production and workshops, strengthening cultural sensitivity in the interaction between tourism and reindeer husbandry and strengthening the responsible and environmentally friendly image to increase competitiveness. The project will be implemented from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2021 (24 months). The total budget of the project is EUR 292 966.
