Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere, replacing fossil fuels with renewable fuels and reducing waste are key to the EU’s climate recycling targets. Biogas plays an important role in achieving these objectives. However, the utilisation of biogas in Finland is still limited and it can be said that the biogas market and the infrastructure enabling the market to function are still developing. Increasing biogas utilisation therefore raises a number of issues and uncertainties that slow down the increase in the volume of biogas production and the increased use of biogas. One of these is the technical economic challenges associated with the liquefaction of biogas. For biogas to grow significantly, uncertainties, obstacles, bottlenecks and framework conditions that slow down development and investment decisions need to be understood, mitigated and removed. This project will produce new information on these issues and uncertainties. The overall goal of the project is to increase new know-how and create conditions for biogas operations and for increasing the use of biogas through the creation of technical economic studies, measurements and common operating models. The project will be implemented by the University of Vaasa and will be implemented between 1 March 2020 and 28.2.2022.The aim of the project is:1) to examine the conditions for creating new regional infrastructure for liquefied biogas in the Vaasa region. 2) to verify the environmental friendliness of biogas transport fuel use by measuring methane emissions in biogas buses and by studying the sustainability and maintenance needs of biogas-fired heavy equipment; 3) to explore the technological economic potential of biogas in research and testing activities of industry and universities in the region, greenhouses and local energy systems related to tmaterial cycles, (4) to create common operating models in the biogas business network between different actors, and (5) to develop expertise in the biogas industry in Ostrobothnia and to increase the number of experts.
