6Aika Ilpo — Climate-positive business areas and value chains

6Time: The Ilpo — Climate-positive business areas and value chains project aims to support cities in achieving their ambitious climate goals. The Ilpo project will involve companies’ value chains and circular economy centres in joint climate work that requires all actors in society. The aim is to help companies to find new solutions and cooperation models that are lower-emission and carbon-bound, to create carbon road maps for circular economy centres and to create internationally interesting references in a climate-positive business area. Carbon road maps help to verify emissions and find solutions to minimise climate impacts and to reach climate-positive activities and processes. In addition to climate impacts, the project examines the impact of new operating models and processes on the business economy. The project will develop and test operating models with circular economy-focused business areas, industrial enterprises and companies offering solutions. The operating models enable the development of emission calculation and compensation models, the measurement of carbon balances, the review of value chains and piloting of new technologies. The indirect objective is, among other things, to develop a comprehensive understanding of the Finnish cleantech companies’ business and know-how about climate positiveness. Pilot service projects can support technology solution providers and help companies that develop low-emission business in the sector to highlight their own services, improve their competitiveness and grow their business both nationally and internationally. The project will make circular economy centres located in 6Aika city districts as reference sites for climate-positive business areas, where scalable solutions for climate positiveness are sought and tested. Examples of the solution include the development of carbon sinks through various processes such as pyrolysis and hydrothermal (HTL) liquefaction. There are also several closed or closed landfill sites in Finland, the introduction of which will also be examined for the production of biocarbon in the project. The purpose of the project communication is to reach out to the companies that are key to the project’s activities. The main focus is on disseminating developed operating models and solutions and supporting climate objectives in six cities. In line with the strategy of 6Aika, the Ilpo — climate-positive business areas and value chains project will take advantage of the completed 6Aika project: CircHubs The network of business cooperation established in the CircHubs project, as well as the brand, communication channels and platforms created in the project. The use of a ready-made platform (cf. the Telaketju network, which develops the circular economy of textiles and implements several projects) will ensure the launch of a rapid project and its wide reach, which is of paramount importance given the short duration of the project. Participants in the project are the City of Turku, Southwest Finland Jätehuolto Oy (LSJH), Business Tampere, the City of Vantaa and the University of Tampere. The project’s target areas and pilot platforms are Topinpuisto’s Circular Economy Centre and its value chains in Turku, the developing Circular Economy Centre in Vantaa and various business value chains in the Tampere region. The project will target companies operating in these areas and/or participating in value chains, their networks and companies offering new climate solutions. The project will result in a strong national and international climate positive action network. During the project, emission sources and carbon sinks in circular economy centres will be identified and carbon balances calculated in these regions and value chains identified as significant. The result of the calculation work is a scalable and replicable climate positivity calculation model for business areas and value chains. As a result of the project, new climate-positive business and cooperation models have been identified and solutions for local emission compensation have been developed. Based on the results of experiments with companies during the project, recommendations for climate-positive investments and measures will be prepared for circular economy centres, other business ecosystems, production value chains or individual companies. The project will result in a scalable coal road map and a model of a climate-positive business area. The experiments and the results and operating models of the project will be compiled and documented to support effective dissemination and implementation. The coal road map and other climate-positive operating models produced in the project will be disseminated throughout the project to other circular economy areas, such as circular economy centres in Finland that are part of the CircHubs network.
