6Aika CarbonWise

Businesses have awakened the need for action to address climate change and to slow it down. People’s increased environmental awareness influences the choices made by consumers and customers. Increasing environmental awareness and carbon footprint reduction targets also affect companies‘supply chains and subcontracting. The CarbonWise project promotes companies’ awareness of their carbon footprint, reduces it and builds a competitive advantage of a smart carbon strategy and product and service development, taking into account the potential of the circular economy. Carbon wisdom refers to an energy-efficient and life-cycle business with minimal environmental impact. The CarbonWise project enables companies to understand the composition of their carbon footprint and enables companies to monitor their carbon footprint parameters themselves. Project activities contribute significantly to the environmental know-how of enterprises. The project enables companies to know how to reduce their carbon footprint during and after the project. The project thus has a significant impact on the sustainability of the use of natural resources by companies and, in part, cities through carbon footprint calculations and the processes developed thereunder. The project takes into account the risk factors and business opportunities caused by climate change. The activities of the project will reduce the impact of climate change and promote biodiversity in the long term. The project’s activities aim to significantly reduce the environmental load and greenhouse gases of companies in both the short and long term. In relation to the horizontal principles, economic sustainability is manifested in the following ways: The project’s activities aim to significantly reduce the use of materials and waste generation by companies. The project aims to increase the use of renewable energy sources in enterprises by demonstrating the importance of energy sources in the carbon footprint generated by carbon calculations. Environmental awareness and low carbon are emerging trends related to companies. Consumers are calling for this to be taken into account, and investors are also giving more and more weight to this. The project will develop ways to carry out business operations in a sustainable manner. The project focuses significantly on the theme of intangible value creation. The project activities will develop intangible products and services. The project seeks innovations in low-carbon modes of transport and mobility, both for the travel of event visitors and for the delivery of goods. In Espoo, for example, the target group is tourism companies. In relation to social and cultural sustainability and equality, the promotion of general well-being is reflected in the project activities so that companies profiled to be sustainable have a direct and indirect impact on residents and tourists in the area. They create a positive image of the area and increase the pride of locals in their own area, thus contributing to well-being. Gender equality and mainstreaming are principles to be implemented by the project, but the focus is not on them. The focus and number of gender-related activities will be clear during the implementation phase of the project. The gender perspective and, for example, increasing the heterogeneity of the gender distribution of groups can be taken into account in the activities of the project through tailor-made actions, for example by means of targeted information. The target groups of the project are enterprises of different sizes regardless of the industry, as pilots such as tourism (Espoo), companies in the Oulu region without industry limit, companies linked to the campus area of Turku University of Applied Sciences (located in or later located in the region or others who can offer their products or services in the area). In addition, the project’s pilots and partners in the project are the pilot site of the urban organisation (BusinessAsema in Oulu), the City of Oulu’s limited liability company Oulun Satama Oy and Kiertokaari Oy, the largest owner of which is the City of Oulu. The project consists of three common task packages, namely a work package that will be implemented in all participating cities. Work packages are partly implemented in different ways in different cities, but with mutual support and benefits. The first work package focuses on carbon footprint calculation, the second work package on reducing carbon footprints, and the third work package on making the lower carbon footprint visible and branding. Project management and communication will complete the entire lifecycle of the project. As a result of the project, the participating companies and the pilot sites of urban organisations have cleared their own carbon footprint, reduced it and used carbon wisdom in their communication. The carbon footprint of the region has been reduced.
