Green travel chains

The objectives of the Green Travel Chains project are to increase energy-efficient and low-carbon mobility and to create new business opportunities for businesses through promoting energy-efficient mobility and understanding travel chains. The project’s measures will help companies to develop new business by digitising route and schedule information and piloting low-carbon travel chains. In addition, the project will increase network-based cooperation between transport service providers and increase the skills of companies in the transport services sector. The project promotes the creation of smooth travel chains for important contact periods in the Turku region outside the city centre. The project promotes the sustainable use of natural resources by directing users’ choice of mode of transport towards public transport and more energy-efficient travel, and by highlighting these alternatives instead of private cars. The Green Travel Chains project digitises timetable and route information on selected pilot routes. For companies, the digitised material can be used to develop new business and it contributes to the creation of MaaS (Mobility as a Service) services in the region. The digitised schedule, route and service information of pilot routes will be tested with new technology, e.g. OpenStreetMap, where traffic data will be built based on schedule information, route information and energy efficiency. Through the service design process for selected routes, transport service providers, such as companies and public operators, understand customers’ needs in developing travel chains, identify new potential user groups and business opportunities, and gain insight into the development of existing services. At the same time, bottlenecks and gaps in the provision of services on pilot routes will be identified. The activities of the projects promote cooperation between transport service providers and bring together public and market-based services in the same channel to streamline travel chains. The Green Travel Chains project provides trainings for companies on low-carbon travel chains and customer needs, as well as on technology solutions that promote energy efficiency. Transport service providers gain an understanding of the development of travel chains between different modes of transport, as well as of the benefits of a network-like service ecosystem in developing businesses’ business and sustainability.
