6Aika Partnership Model for Sustainable Districts (KIEPPI)

The aim of the project is to develop sustainable urban areas from Kera, Tampere, Hiedanranta and Turku Science Park, where new business and jobs based on the circular and sharing economy will be created. The project will produce a platform model for a carbon-neutral district where the various material flows needed for urban growth will circulate as closed and resource-wise as possible in the regional economy. The project will develop and bring together new circular economy solutions to support the development of targeted neighbourhoods into sustainable and attractive residents, jobs and services. The project will develop a partnership model for sustainable districts, which will define collaborative approaches of city, business, research and urban residents to implement circular economy in the planning and construction of infrastructure and services in the district. The project will provide new references and scalable business concepts for future companies on smart and resource-wise products and services to address the challenges of urban growth. The company will be involved in the development of the regions already at the planning stage, which will enable new, sustainable solutions to be developed better than the traditional regional construction model. The products, services and business concepts to support the regional economy developed in the project will contribute substantially to building sustainable, carbon-neutral, healthy, safe, comfortable and well-being living and operating environments. The project’s workshops and pilots are open to companies, service developers and their users, regardless of gender. The project makes it possible to tailor new services to urban residents, thus providing equal treatment of residents, taking into account gender and possible needs of special groups. The project is structured in three consecutive phases, repeated in both years of implementation of the project. The partnership model for sustainable neighbourhoods is built at all stages. As a first step, a development partnership will be sought for the partnership model. This is done by inviting companies, research institutes and citizens (Quadruple Helix principle) to develop a city district together with the city. The other is to carry out pilots on the following topics: Facilities, sharing and circular economy services, utilisation of nutrient, energy and material flows, urban food production solutions, waste and side streams, as well as diverse and health-promoting blue-green structures. In the third phase, results will be scaled to district and urban levels, and finally the partnership model itself will be conceived to spread to other cities. The project will result in a partnership model for sustainable districts. The model changes the role of the city from the subscriber and/or the implementer to the platform and partner. The partnership model and the results of the pilots will be scaled up at district and city level so that they can also be utilised in other cities. As a result, an open and growing network of partnerships has been developed in the participating cities, which continuously develops and produces products and services for the needs of a sustainable and carbon-neutral city. The model developed in the project enables and creates the conditions for participation in international EU funding applications and research and development projects.
