the e-Smartelli project develops expertise and knowledge on the possibilities of artificial intelligence for companies and other actors involved in the industrial internet by building a combined research and testing environment for the University of Jyväskylä and Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences for research and training purposes. The project’s operating environment will be developed in such a way that it can also be used as a learning platform adapted to the needs of training programmes. The project will raise awareness of the potential of industrial internet artificial intelligence among the various actors and at the same time increase the skills of project promoters, thus improving the opportunities to train new talents. The aim of the project is to develop and pilot new AI solutions from selected business areas. The solutions will result in a new business that will increase the existing business and increase the jobs in the region. Artificial intelligence and IoT are still at an early stage of technology, where there are significant synergies between the different actors by working together and through ERNs, as the results of different pilots are thus accessible to all, and the actors do not need to study all solutions and methods with the help of their own organisation. The concept of knowledge sharing and knowledge growth in the project can be termed ERN learning. The project creates procedures and technologies in which artificial intelligence is used to develop new approaches and models and at the same time create a secure industrial Internet. This brings both national benefits and competitiveness for businesses. The test environment to be built in the project offers good opportunities for various AI-based pilots, connects users as experimenters with a new solution, supports the implementation of the necessary changes in the deployment environment, supports the preparation of the deployment and procurement of the new solution, presents the implementation of the solution to potential deployers and creates the conditions for its dissemination. There are two main research areas for the application of AI: Cloud-based AI applications are based on big data processing using cloud servers where data is collected from databases and IoT devices. Rauna computing or edge-based AI applications are based on data processing in the IoT device or device interface. The project aims to explore both main branches. Cloud-based AI applications use software installed on the servers of the University of Applied Sciences and the services of large cloud providers. For edge intelligence applications, embedded IoT devices and software are used. The project aims to identify, for example, which types of IoT devices are suitable for edge computing. The project will involve a wide range of companies and actors from a broad application area, where learning through the ERN will provide these companies with a broader view and know-how of the different methodological options that can be used in AI and IoT solutions. The development of secure data analytics solutions will bring added value to the project’s target groups, enabling a shift towards smart and autonomous systems (network of systems).
