Improving logistical connections in the Savilahti region

The aim is to solve the logistical bottleneck factor in the Kuopio Savilahti region and to improve the competitiveness and transport accessibility of the companies in the region and the whole area growing rapidly. Savilahti is the fastest growing merger between Kuopio and Eastern Finland. Since 2000, the number of enterprises located in the region has increased by an average of ten per year. There are currently more than 200 companies in Savilahti, the vast majority of which are about 150 SMEs. Savilahti, located close to the centre of Kuopio, is now a science and business park area for about 20,000 people, with actors such as the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio University Hospital, Savonia AMK, Technopolis Oyj, hundreds of companies and several state sector research institutes. By 2030, Savilahti will grow into a diverse district of 35,000 operators, where living, studying, business, innovation, working and scientific research overlap with each other. Savilahti is developing a low-carbon smart city. Housing services are located in Savilahti for approximately 7000-8000 inhabitants and the area hosts service companies and a sports and event centre in the rock cave in the depot area. According to the studies, the two motorway connections in the north and south directions are insufficient. The investment will provide a new transport link from the Highway 5 to the Savilahti region. It improves the overall functionality and logistical connections and logistical efficiency of the rapidly growing and developing Savilahti region, strengthens the competitiveness and accessibility of enterprises, supports the emergence and further development of new business areas, and also supports the availability of personnel in companies. Over the years, the Savilahti region has innovated several growth stories. An example is ARK Therapies Oy, which has grown from a two-person drug development company to a company currently operating under the name of Finvector Oy with well over 100 employees. Cerebricon Oy started in 2001 as a company of one person. They now operate as an international company under the name Charles River, which also employs more than 100 employees. Savilahti’s merger involves a large number of SMEs with a high growth potential. One of the most well-known growers is NewIcon Oy, which manufactures pharmacy robots, which has grown in a few years to become a technology company employing about 40 people. As of 2019, the area’s zoning situation will enable the introduction of new business areas in the Savilahti region, where business premises are becoming full and where there is currently a shortage of alternative premises and locations and where companies are increasingly attracting interest. In the coming years, several business premises projects serving the business sector will be launched in the region.
