The BlackGreen RDI programme produces new and refines existing biocarbon data for use in North Karelia and Finland’s bioeconomy sector. North Karelia is becoming a major production hub of modern reactive coal. Biocarbon is a modern reactive coal for which there is a rapid large-scale demand for energy production, where renewable wood-based fuel replaces fossil fuel in coal-fired energy plants. In the production of steel, there is also a high volume potential for biocarbon. Further refined biocarbon is a high added value product with many applications in areas such as filtering, cleaning, composting, soil improvement, carbon storage, biogas production in animal nutrition and e.g. in medicine. The BlackGreen programme provides information on products, markets, manufacturing processes and durability, as well as raw material and product logistics. In addition, the project effectively communicates development work and the potential of biocoal. The project will be implemented under Luke’s leadership and will also involve UEF, Karelia University of Applied Sciences and Business Joensuu, who are all implementing the project with a significant contribution focusing on their strengths.
