6Time: CircularHoodFood Circular economy in urban districts — low carbon food, urban production and bio-waste recycling

Urban food production generally refers to all food that can be produced in cities. Fast-moving technology enables a lot of new, disconnected alternatives from traditional agriculture. The CircularHoodFood project seeks solutions for sustainable city planning and develops opportunities to take into account the potential of urban farming and, more generally, the needs related to the circular economy of food in the urban environment. CircularHoodFood promotes the emergence of a carbon-neutral urban environment, circular economy solutions in the urban environment, a reduction in the carbon footprint of food, and the emergence of new business, cooperation and solutions related to urban food production. More specifically, the objectives of the project are: 1) Develop understanding and solutions to support urban and regional development of the transformation of food production due to climate change, declining arable land and technological progress. Through experiments, we collect lessons and workable solutions for food production in the urban environment. 2) Promote the emergence of new business and cooperation related to urban food production and the circular economy of food, as well as the identification of the business ecosystem of urban food production based on the total value chain, as well as the activation of nuclear companies in the co-development of new solutions and the implementation of experiments. 3) Develop and increase urban food production, local food production, food appreciation and bio-waste sorting and promote the growth of related know-how and new co-operation models. Explore the potential and recovery of higher value added of bio-waste. Integrating experience into regional and town planning practices. The new value of CircularHoodFood is to gather knowledge, create new know-how and business in urban food production by involving a wide range of actors in development and experimentation. The project will carry out various concrete experiments, both in companies and in residential properties, on urban food production, bio-waste sorting and raising the appreciation of food. The project will also build new cooperation between operators and businesses on urban food. The expertise generated by the CircularHoodFood project can be utilised to support urban planning, companies and housing companies alike. The project promotes the goals of sustainable development in a variety of ways. The project supports the sustainable development of the local economic fabric by bringing together a multidisciplinary network of actors related to sustainable food production and urban farming and social sustainability, creating new expert knowledge on the design practices of a sustainable, low-carbon circular city. In reducing food losses and promoting bio-waste sorting also in housing companies, environmental awareness and know-how is growing. The project implements ecological sustainability by promoting local production in the urban environment, which reduces the environmental impact of food (reduced transport emissions, etc.), supports biodiversity and improves land use and makes the urban environment more comfortable.
