The service is me! — the project is looking for new approaches and developing existing actors and networks to help disadvantaged young people, especially those who are mentally ill. The project will establish a rehabilitation day centre where young people in need will receive the support and rehabilitation they need. Young people are offered the opportunity to engage in group activities and individual support for life management. The activities are based on youth work. The Day Action Centre offers young people a place where they can get the support they need and they will not be redirected to the next service provider. The aim is to create a new approach that breaks away from the current ‘dispatching culture’ and develops a new approach based on the ‘Service I Me’ principle, where young people receive the support they need in one place. The mental health services currently available do not reach young people in need effectively enough. In practice, for example, rehabilitation courses for young people in Kela have had to be cancelled because there are not enough participants or the participants have not entered rehabilitation. On the other hand, in Vantaa, for example, the youth guidance and support centre Kipinä and workshops are directed to young people who are too unfit to participate in their activities. There is no suitable place for these unfit young people to get the help or support they need. The root cause of the problem is that services are fragmented and do not know how to guide them. For example, doctors do not direct young people to Kela’s rehabilitation courses. There is no place where, for example, the guidance and support centre in Kipinä could be directed to young people who are too unfit. Their own problems are young people who are not even reached. The aim of the project is initially to identify existing services. Identify which services are missing (qualitative/qualitative). On the basis of the study carried out, cooperation will be developed between actors active in the field of mental health services for young people. The specific objective is to develop opportunities for those working with young people at risk of exclusion or already marginalised (e.g. outreach youth work) to refer young people to suitable services. The project will develop an approach suitable for young people who are in poor condition. This approach is aimed at young people who are not yet able to engage and operate in regular guided activities such as Kipinä or youth workshops. In the case of young people who are directed to the target group (through the guidance and support centre Kipinä to the project), the reasons why the young person is not attached to the services are investigated, taking into account the gender perspective. With the development of the Service I am me! — the approach seeks to improve this; enhanced support in customer work as well as in network cooperation. The starting point of the action is the individual need of a young man or woman. The gender perspective will be used as one of the evaluation criteria. The main research section maps Vantaa’s mental health services for young people and their functionality; we will also find out which services are missing. A gender-sensitive approach to young people’s user perspective; the interviews aim to refine successful service paths, experiences and wishes of young people. As a result of the project, the activities of the youth service network will be developed in such a way that the operators are aware of the services offered and are able to direct young people to these services. Develop the necessary services with partners for those young people who do not currently have suitable services. The end result is a well-established approach to reaching out to young people in the target group, engaging in activities and redirecting them to study or work.
