Style — working life and work-based learning for university studies

The project “Style — working life periods and on-the-job learning to university studies” aims to improve students’ working life skills and equal employment opportunities, as well as motivation for learning and to promote the progress of studies. These are all connected. The aim is to enable students on an equal footing to get a good start on the labour market even during their studies. Particular attention will be given to sectors that do not directly prepare a particular profession. The project involves six universities: Aalto University, University of Lapland, Lappeenranta University of Technology, University of Oulu, Tampere University of Technology and University of Turku. The joint development of these universities aims to create new models of internships and work placements in university education programmes. During studies such as summer-time work, the aim is to make the work experience gained from the perspective of work-based learning (studying). In this case, work experience can also be credited and thus contribute to the progress of studies through the reduction of the periods of completion of qualifications and the increased integration of the studies into working life. The aim is to improve the integration of training programmes into working life and to support education leadership in curriculum development. The training developed and implemented in the project increases teachers’ working life skills and improves their ability to plan and implement work-based study periods, to create working life contacts, and to support the student’s career planning and employment. Representatives of employers and enterprises will be involved more systematically and more widely in curriculum work and in the planning and implementation of studies. The results of the project’s development work will be made nationally disseminated. The practices and methods of working life cooperation and competence developed in the project can be extended to be implemented in various educational programmes and throughout Finland’s university field. The project supports the exchange of knowledge between universities and enables the creation of models of cooperation between universities at national level. The project creates new methods of communication and cooperation between representatives of university education and working life. The measures are in line with the strategies of the universities involved in the project, as well as with the government programme, the provincial programmes and the Lapland Agreement. The project supports the Baltic Sea and Northern Finland strategies, as well as the EU’s ten-year growth strategy for Europe 2020, which aims, among other things, to strengthen the EU’s competitiveness and employment.
