I learned on the stairs in Satakunta

A surprisingly large number of migrants and refugees require a rapid response from the education sector to support integration processes. Many migrants and refugees have already been trained in their home country and have been employed in different sectors. Their integration and motivation for learning Finnish language can be strengthened on the steps of Opi in Satakunta with the help of the project. The aim of the project is to produce easily accessible digital information about Finnish educational opportunities for immigrants and refugees. The information is produced in key migrant and refugee languages, e.g. Arabic, Dari, Persian, Kurdish, Turkish, Russian and Somali. The website presents training opportunities at 2nd degree and higher education, and is accompanied by video presentations about studying methods and traineeships. In addition, the videos provide examples of tasks for which representatives of different professions are most frequently employed. The second objective of the project is to create a culturally sensitive support structure that promotes the capacity of higher education, which promotes the smooth transition of students with a migrant background from 2nd to polytechnic studies. It also gives them a good capacity to use the tools and applications needed for online and multimodal learning. The project will increase cooperation between bodies and projects supporting, implementing and investigating immigrants’ education and employment. The project promotes the integration of people with a migrant background, a targeted establishment in a place of education and promotes their educational equality by improving access to higher education. The digital material developed in the project can be easily disseminated for national use, e.g. in reception centres and as part of integration support measures. The operating methods created by the support structure remain in place in the institutions and can be used in other higher education institutions and in the 2nd level institutions. The project is planned and implemented as a network collaboration between the Diakonia University of Applied Sciences, Sataedu and WinNova University of Applied Sciences. The content of digital materials is produced as learning tasks for interpreting students and Russian-language material at SATAEDU, coordinated by the Departmental Interpretation Lecturer at Diakonia University of Applied Sciences. The language versions produced by the students are checked with the expertise of the Interpretation Centre. The Deaconia University of Applied Sciences is responsible for updating the digital material after the end of the project. The project works closely with organisations and organisations working with immigrants. These include, for example, reception centres in the Satakunta region, the Finnish Red Cross, Rauman Seudun Street Post Office, Satakunta Multicultural Association and Nuori Pori 2100 ry. Their expertise will be used to create a support structure for the project and to design, deploy and disseminate digital materials. The main results of the project are 1) Digital materials on Finnish educational opportunities in key immigrant languages (informative website, videos of trainings and placements in different professional positions).2) Support structure to strengthen university capacities, online and multiform learning skills, which starts during the 2nd degree studies and continues until the initial phase of the studies.3) Info sessions, articles and seminar materials on the results of the project.4) Cooperation network and social media interaction with actors supporting, implementing and investigating immigrants’ education, well-being and employment. The project promotes access to education for immigrants and prevents the early marginalisation of young people during the transition phase of education levels. It strengthens the trust of immigrant communities in their own skills and access to education. The project will increase equal treatment and build capacity for intercultural trust and interaction. The project will contribute to social and cultural sustainability and greater equality by promoting equal access to education for immigrants, non-discrimination and access to the knowledge and expertise of immigrants to the services of the region and their development. The project promotes equal access to study opportunities for both sexes. This project will produce and exchange expertise on the steps of Opi, funded by Northern Ostrobothnia Elyn, already underway in Northern Ostrobothnia.
