Attraction for technology industries

The project addresses two key problems in both Varsinais-Suomi and the whole country, the weak attractiveness of the technology industry and the general need to improve the services of the transition phases of education through cooperation between different levels of education and working life. From the beginning, the project idea emerged at the meeting of the joint municipal councillors and principals of vocational education in Southwest Finland, where a joint will emerged to start planning and implementing a project to increase the attractiveness of training in technology fields in particular. Particular attention was paid to the machinery and metals sector, which is suffering from a shortage of students throughout the region, despite the recent improvement in employment in the sector. In addition to increasing the attractiveness of the technology industry, the “attraction to technology sectors” project strengthens and develops methods and services supporting the transition from education to education and working life, as well as increasing cooperation and interaction between education and working life. At the same time, improving the work-life balance of education and training, thereby contributing to the achievement of the education, training and youth guarantee, as well as enhancing the qualification and integration of young people in vocational education and training into the labour market. The problems to be addressed are national, so the new operating models and good practices developed in the project can also be utilised nationwide. The project will establish a new kind of network of companies interested in developing the attractiveness of the technology sector and deepening concrete cooperation between educational institutions. Through the cooperation network, various partnerships are formed between educational institutions and businesses. Together with young people already studying the field, they are developing operational marketing and information campaigns using new technologies and gamification to promote the sector, as well as its educational and employment opportunities, to young people in the final classes of primary education and at second level. In addition, during the project, there will be business agents working together to develop the model of twinning partnerships in practice, creating added value for networking and business cooperation between different educational institutions. In the preparatory phase of the project, the entire network of partners responsible for implementing the project has been involved, including the City of Turku’s cultural industry, the Konetechnology Centre Turku Oy, the South-Western-Finnish Association for Education, WinNova, the Raisio Region Education Association, the Salo Region Education Municipality Association and Turku University of Applied Sciences Ltd. The project’s main target groups are:- young people of secondary school age and their parents/secondary students (vocational and upper secondary education) — teaching and guidance staff at primary and secondary level- other bodies responsible for youth guidance (e.g. youth work, youth work, outreach youth work, youth outreach, youth workshops, etc.) the indirect target groups of the project include representatives of educational institutions, labour administration, guidance actors, development projects, companies and other stakeholders (e.g. chambers of commerce, business associations and trade unions) outside the implementation network in the province of Southwest Finland and elsewhere in Finland. The project will achieve the following results:- the attractiveness of education and training in the field of technology industry will increase throughout the region- the awareness of staff in primary and secondary education, pupils and students as well as their parents and young people not in education or employment and parents of the technology industry will increase- cooperation between educational institutions and working life, and the visibility of enterprises in educational institutions and the introduction of new forms of cooperation between enterprises and educational institutions in the province (e.g. twinning partnership, business agents)- develop and introduce new, innovative guidance models and work tools, as well as more work-intensive learning environments and training implementation models in Finland; vocational excellence and teaching motives are being implemented in the region.
