Early identification and treatment of drug use in adolescents/Recognition and Early Intervention for Alcohol and Substance Abuse in Adolescence (REAL)

OBJECTIVES: We are looking for funding to improve the identification of young people’s substance use and to improve the treatment and rehabilitation of substance abuse problems. The aim of the project is to promote the well-being and inclusion of young people by preventing and treating the development of substance abuse problems. Tackling drug use at an early stage can prevent exclusion and the resulting social inequalities. Drug use, mental health problems and dropping out of work and studies are often collected by the same people, and this cycle should be cut off as early as possible. This project with young people and other partners (school, pupil health care, primary health care) (1) makes a digital version of the WHO ASSIST in-kind screening form, which allows immediate access to drugs and, where necessary, guidance for treatment regardless of the young person’s place of residence. We make the form workable and suitable for use by young people, first with healthy young people and then with young people coming to youth psychiatric care. We will start a project with 2) young people who will be directed to youth psychiatric research and 3) expand the project later into school and study health care and all youth services. 4) Finally, the form will also be taken to the national, existing mental health centre website for national use. It also reaches young people in remote areas and those who are unable or unwilling to access other services. Screening for substance abuse problems is not useful if there is also no help. 5) We develop a suitable drug treatment chain for young people. The treatment chain should be as clear as possible and it should be easy for young people to seek treatment. As far as possible, treatment should also be provided without delay when young people are motivated. The ultimate goal is that the online version enables young people to identify the degree of substance abuse problems, receive immediate feedback (mini-inteventio) and, if necessary, information on how to seek treatment. Thus, if realised, it could save the cost of reaching young people in a wider area with existing resources.
