The project is based on the need to streamline the educational pathways of migrants and people with a migrant background, in particular the transition from vocational education and training to higher vocational education. The aim of the project is to support the rapid access of newcomers and second-generation immigrants and people with a migrant background to university studies, especially in the social and health care sector, and consequently employment in the sector. The project will promote the inclusion and educational equality of under-represented groups in higher education, in particular migrants, by improving their access to higher education. The second objective of the project is to improve the capacity of instructors in working life to guide immigrants and support Finnish language learning. The measures of the project are: 1. Assembling a motivated group of students and recognising previous know-how. 2. Implementation of a Bachelor’s Workshop for selected target groups. 3. Strengthening the working life network and educating supervisors. 4. Evaluation and dissemination of the model developed.The project will produce the following results: 1. The target group of the project has access to studies in the field of social and health care. 2. The Bachelor of Applied Sciences promotes the development of higher education capacity and Finnish language and offers opportunities for working life contacts, which is also relevant in cases where participation in the group does not lead to polytechnic studies. 3. The Bachelor of Applied Sciences promotes students with an immigrant background and offers an opportunity to plan a career ahead already during stage 2 vocational studies. 4. Social and social services network in the Helsinki metropolitan area, which has the capacity to take trainees with a migrant background and to employ graduates with a migrant background. 5. A training package and educational materials have been produced for people with a migrant background. 6. The implementation model and methods of the Bachelor of Applied Sciences have been designed and tested with a pilot group. The main developer of the project is Diakonia University of Applied Sciences Ltd, and the participants are Suomen Diakoniaopisto Oy and the City of Helsinki’s Stadi Vocational College/Stad Centre of Excellence.
